Spring rocking horses are an alternative to traditional wooden horses with rocking bases. It is believed that they were first commercially produced in the 1950s. A spring horse is suspended on a weighted frame by four heavy duty springs. The springs are usually covered to prevent injury and damage. This type of horse is a good option if you don't have a lot of space, as the rocking motion is contained within the frame, unlike a traditional wooden rocking horse.
Spring rocking horses are generally suitable for children from the ages of 2-6 years old, but do check individual models for details. The movement is more of a bounce than a rock, although rocking movement is possible. A spring rocking horse can have a body made from wood, plastic or it is also possible to buy a plush spring horse. The prices are typically in the -0 range, although it depends on the model. These require batteries so if the sound starts driving you crazy, you can remove the batteries to make it quiet again! Some of the spring horses with sound are motion activated, so your child can really imagine they are riding out on the plains
If you do buy a spring rocking horse for your child, make sure you site it in a safe place. They are generally lower than other kinds of horse, but there is still a small danger of children falling, so make sure there is nothing they can hit themselves on if they do fall. Even though a these types are safer than a traditional rocking horse, accidents can still happen so make sure your child is not left alone while playing on the toy, and make sure they don't go too fast, as this can occasionally cause the springs to break, especially with bigger children.
There is also a second type of spring rocking horse. This type is generally for outdoor use and can be seen in playgrounds as well as in gardens. This type is usually a simple wooden, plastic or metal structure, on top of a heavy duty upright spring. This kind of toy will move in all directions. Because of the way it moves, it is not suitable for very young children, and if you do have one of this kind of rocking horse, then you need to make sure there is a soft area underneath it. Special matting or wood chips are available for this purpose.
Rocker or spring, plush, plastic, wooden or even antique; you will have problems making your choice between the different kinds of horse available. Whether you choose a spring rocking horse or not, you can be certain that your child will really love it.
